Tony Sylveira struggles to help others through the use of a controversial medicine. The young bakery owner attempts to keep his family in tact as he takes on a role that he is neither expecting nor prepared for. The San Mateo Bakery not only produces fresh, handmade Italian bread, it also bakes a less than legal remedy for those with painful, often fatal diseases.

Tony finds himself in jail and fighting for his freedom after being arrested for manufacturing a controlled substance. What follows is an example of how hidden, political and forces can affect legislation regarding the every day lives of the critically ill.

In this story, the conservative as well as the liberal minded of San Mateo are asked to consider the plight and suffering faced by the terminally ill. Who should have the authority to tell chemotherapy patients what they can and cannot use to survive one more day? When does the need of the suffering supersede a society's laws?

It is with great hope that The Baker resonates with a world that believes in compassion for those who have been driven to last resorts. Unfortunately, the use of marijuana as a recreational drug has overshadowed it's validity as a true medicine for the sick and dying.

The reality of the human situation is that random cell mutation, genetic mishaps and terrible luck of the draw is perhaps all that separates those who's existence is filled with suffering and who truly need these medicines - from those who do not know such dark realities and who choose to withhold such small offerings to those with severe afflctions.
